My dear friend and fellow artist Donna Moore and I had a conversation many moons ago about wheat pasting portraits up around town. The conversation would come and go over the past few years - ideas would morph, plans would be conjured and no real action would take place. Finally Donna decided that she would push the idea to the next step and got some funding to get the project going. Through both A1LabArts and her Big Camera association - the project moved to the next step. I am thrilled to be a piece of the puzzle to make it come together with Donna conducting! I am one of the 3 photographers of the portraits and part of the MANY MANY hands to physically install the work! If you are in the Knoxville area - check out the install at Crafty Bastard Brewery, A1Labarts, Architectural Antics, & Vinyard Flooring Co. (we are hoping to continue to install in other spots around town) Here are a few snapshots:
I met up with my friend Donna - you can find her website over there on the the sidebar- for an overdue art day. Starting early morning we pulled a pack of expired photo paper 20 x 24, some trays and nature materials. We exposed the paper and the colors that came thru were stunning! Unlike any other we had seen before! We continued with another and another - saying maybe just one more - each print would have us squealing with excitement. It was truly exciting to watch the process reveal itself and then we would hone in on elements we wanted to repeat. The fun part of this particular project was that it really was part magic and part science... and of course the company of each other and the immediate satisfaction you get like from a Polaroid. It was such a wonderful day!
Then a bonus was when we submitted some of the work to The Hand magazine and found ourselves published in the latest issue! a small project to get my creative juices going again. Nothing fancy. Not high def. Just a study of sorts.
Music is by Lila Downs: Benediction and Dream A little while back I got introduced to Adam & James from The Hand Magazine to have an exhibition at the gallery I help run by Donna. What a great adventure it was and we had a FANTASTIC exhibition!!! Since then I have subscribed to their magazine that they put together--- and I look forward to each magazine I get in the mail. It is a collection of artists work, focusing on printed work- photo based, printmaking and sneaking some video in too. I always save mine for a Sunday morning when I can sit in my chair by my front window with my coffee and my dog licking my leg; I study each page. This past issue came with a print project that Adam and James encouraged us to take the print and make it something new. So here is mine: Try try try again.
I am going to get better about keeping up with this part. I have paired down some of my responsibilities for this year and I am looking forward with new creative thoughts. I am going to do my best to check in here every now and then with thoughts or to share a few shots from some of my shoots. I love this image, found *here*.
The entire series is great. I think it is great because of the framing of the snapshots, the woman , the cat & the situations documented. I love them. |
